About Aesthetic Poetic

Nothing can prepare you for a career as a creative. Once you are in it, there are no support networks to lean on; you’re on your own. Occasionally you will come across places that will aid your creative experience and make something – no matter how small – that much easier. There are hidden treasure troves of knowledge and experience and inspiration, places to connect with other creatives, if you know where to find them.

You can live, and then there’s living and learning. There’s an art to it. A life of learning is a thing of beauty and everyday has its opportunities to learn something new.

About the writer

My name is Kate and I’ve been in advertising for over a decade. In that time I have delved into graphic design, finished art, pre-press, account management, 3D, illustration, painting, photography and stock imagery. Creativity and advertising can be fun and rewarding, but also stressful and hard. If you want to survive it there are a few things you need to know, as I am continually finding out! If anything I have learned over the years, and anything I might even learn today, I’d like to share it. If it relates to you or if you find even just one tidbit of advice helpful for your pursuits, then my job is done.

I studied at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney (UNSW), and now currently work in Brisbane, Australia, as a full-time senior graphic designer.

Ran across you online this morning. Thanks so much for doing this. We gave up the day-jobs just over a year ago and have had the hardest time finding others who can understand the troubles we have faced in running a photography and video production company, not to mention the isolation we’ve felt at times. Creatives are motivated by different things, drawn to different projects, and many of those suck at making money. Thanks for the inspiration and the community.
